Today was a good day to die.
I've always wanted to say that!!!
and for it to make sense in context
Anyway, today was an awesome day. My friend James was fortunate enough to meet Paul (who's a lieutenant in the group, Top Far Right) who allowed us to join the 1st North Carolina Cavalry unit as they fought against those darned Yankees's!
This particular reenactment was held at St. Catherine's Academy, an all boys military school that isn't too far away from where I live. I actually was here last year to watch the event with some high school people. They had went for extra credit. Getting to go back, but this time as a reenactor was simply awesome.
Since we didn't have any of the gear ourself, the people setting up the event almost didn't let us in =P Luckily it wasn't that hard to convince them otherwise (natural 20 bluff?). We got to the confederate camp and promptly suited up in the period clothing. It felt so weird yet cool! The guys of the 1st North Carolina were really nice and friendly. Huge jokesters the lot of them. They didn't seem intimidating at all (despite what the picture may show). In fact when it was time for the whole thing to start, and the kids started walking aroudn asking questions, they were all more than eager to answer and tell them stories about their personas. Always made sure the guns were not loaded before handing it to them.
When we first got there they seemed to be really rushing things, and before we knew it other units were already leaving off too the field. So we thought we might just get stuck with Flag duty or something.
Not the case at all, next thing I know we're all (me james, and THINH! hahah, btw cindy he died in both skirmishes, 2nd battle by a cannon) given carbines (smaller rifles easier to use while on horseback) and pistols. Now these guns, as we were told many MANY times, are very real. The only thing that makes them not completely lethal is that we don't load it with a real bullet of course.
It's actually quite simple to load, you take a packet of gunpowder, rip off the top with your teeth, pour it down the barrel, then take a percussion cap (just like those little rubber ones you use for cap guns) and place right over this little nib that the hammer will fall on to. Then you just cock the gun, aim, and FIRE!
Real guns...are loud. The cannons, even worse. I thought they were loud OFF the battlefield, but being right there in the middle of it all. It's just...freakign awesome.
The first battle we won, and it was pretty straightforward for our side. Being the first time ever holding a firearm and having to reload I felt I did pretty well.
The 2nd battle was pure chaos. It started otu well enough, we though we could flank them. Cavarly went out first, then Infantry came up to support, but then out comes the Union main Infantry force as we were distracted by the sharpshooters, didn't go very well....
Our captain was having us run all over the place, I think he died at one point since I later had myself pushed up with whatever was left of the infantry unit from ealier. It was just me and my lieutenant left as the union infantry slowly marched towards us with no where left to go. I ended up dead with their last shots, after that they demanded surrender.
It was a lot of fun. I'm freaking tired right now. Been up since 7 and running around and shooting....ah, it was just an awesome experience.
Looks like I've got another expensive hobby....
